Researchers in Italy tackle two metalhale-lide perovskiet solar PV challenges, reduce the use of lead and extend the stability of power conversion efficiency, in a new combination of micracular concentrators and picosecond laser operation.

Researchers from the University of Genoa and the University of Rome Tor Vergata take two well-known metalhale-lide perovskiet (MHP) Solar PV challenges, reducing the amount of lead to maintain a high-level conversion efficiency.

By introducing micro concentrators, an alternative strategy for light management and techniques for laser pattern, the research team is said to see positive results in devices with a small area of ​​2.5 cm x 2.5 cm. “The design offers remarkable improvements” compared to the conventional approach, “said research project leader, Shiva Navazani, said PV -Magazine.

The original idea of ​​the project, which is underway until the end of this year, was to use Small-area Fapbi3 Perovskiet solar cells and microlens concentrator technology. However, lens manufacturing obstacles forced the team to switch to Macro-Lens Arrays and laser pattern Substraten.

It created micro concentrators, small double convex lenses with a diameter of 5 cm that concentrate sunlight on a small active cell area and placed above the solar cells at 5 cm and 10 cm distances.

Navazani explained that the set -up increases the light intensity that touches the active PV layer, which can “stimulate the efficiency considerably”, and it does not need so much of the photoactive material that considerably reduces the amount of lead in the device.

The group used a laser pattern process with the perovskiet on glass/indium totin oxide (ITO) substrates, which is “inherent compatible” with upscaling.

In this case they used Picosecond (PS) Laser directly Writing, an ultra -short pulsed laser that broadcasts with a duration of picoseconds to produce characteristics with high precision and low thermal damage. “With the structure with laser patterns, the device can be more resistant to thermal stress and other effects under concentrated light,” said Navazani.

A tailor -made direct writing pattern was used. It was different from the more usual P1, P2 or P3 patterns.

The so-called P1, P2 and P3 writers correspond to the three Scriptures of the process for building the monolithic connections that add tensions between cells in modules. The P1 and P3 steps are aimed at insulating the back contact layers of adjacent cells and the P2 step creates an electric path between the back contact of a cell with the front contact of an adjacent cell. Especially the P3 step is often a source of unwanted effects such as return -in -the inpelamination, flaking or poor electrical insulation, due to residues that stay in the Geul.

The laser operation is said to contribute to improved efficiency compared to the non -planned monster because of a more “homogeneous structure and higher tolerance for thermal and other tensions,” the researchers said.

Testing other performance aspects is underway, including degradation studies and analyzes of lead material release. They will be closed in the final phase of the project.

Some provisional findings were presented in three conference documents on PVSPACE 2023, EUPVSEC 2024 and HOPV 2025. The latter was entitled “OPimalizing light management in perovskiet solar cells via microstructure design. “Peer-reviewed results have not yet been published.

The project, “Self-healing with screen-printed perovoltaic substances beyond the limit of the Shockley-quisser,” is called Sherpa, is planned to be completed this year. It is a project funded by the European Union under its Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action Initiative.
