Italian Startup Suncubes develops solutions for laser-based energy transfer to charge drone batteries during the flight.

After completing various proof-of-concepts, as well as tests that demonstrate his technology in a 600 m transmission in Italy last year, the Suncubes team now works on a minimally viable product (MVP).

“Our technology has been developed with a strong focus on wireless charging during the flight for drones, aimed at drastically extending their operational times and reach. This application required extremely high precision, safety and efficiency, which in turn led to the creation of a robust and versatile system,” Suncubes said. PV -Magazine.

“Thanks to the same characteristics, technology can now be bowls in other sectors, including both terrestrial and space -based applications,” he added.

Indeed, this type of technology that uses lasers to safely send energy or shine to a photovoltaic cellarray of solar energy embedded in a distant recipient remotely, is being developed around the world for a series of terrestrial and space applications. There are research groups that work on components and a variety system designs in China, United StatesUnited Kingdom, Japan, and Australiaas reported by PV -Magazine

To finance the development of the MVP, Suncubes has raised € 1.1 million ($ 1.28 million) in seed financing from an investors established in Italy.

The flagship product platform, known as Suncubes Lucy, ultimately wants electricity over a distance of 3 km, with 500 W optical power, with automatic ways and a 200 W recipient system designed to be electric and mechanically compatible with commonly used unmanned air systems (UAS) standards.

On the demand for preferences for photovoltaic cells of solar energy, Chiozzi said that the company used both “general and adapted” arrays, depending on the specific research applications.

Suncubes was founded in 2023 with the support of the ESA Bic Milan, an incubator of the European Space Agency, managed by Polihub from Politecnico di Milano.
