Midea unveils PV-compatible indoor heat pump for residential applications with limited space – SPE

Midea has launched a compact indoor air heat pump for renovation homes and homes with limited space. The R290-based system offers power up to 4.45 kW, a coefficient of performance of 4.5 and smart PV-compatible controls.

China-based electrical appliance manufacturer Midea has introduced a new compact air heat pump designed for indoor installation, targeting residential applications with limited space and renovation projects across Europe.

The new product deviates from conventional split heat pump designs by eliminating the need for an outdoor unit. Instead, it operates entirely indoors, using two ducts for air intake and exhaust that can be routed through a wall or roof. This configuration is designed for apartment buildings, townhomes and dense urban environments where installing outdoor units is difficult or limited.

The unit is also designed to integrate with existing hydronic heating systems without the need for major modifications to pipes or radiators. The installation is structured in a six-step process, including mounting a bracket system, aligning the unit via guide rails and connecting it to a hydrobox and existing heating loop.

The H-Pack system measures 837mm x 662mm x 489mm and weighs 78.3kg. It offers a nominal heating power of 3.5 kW, with a maximum power of 4.45 kW. It can achieve a coefficient of performance (COP) of 4.5 and is rated A+++ for energy efficiency in average climate conditions at a supply temperature of 35 C.

The unit operates in a wide ambient temperature range from -20 C to 35 C and uses propane (€290 as a natural coolant, in line with European F-gas decarbonization and reduction targets, the company said. The air flow varies between 750 and 1,300 m³/h, while the indoor sound pressure level at a distance of 1 meter is 34 dB(A).

The system includes an integrated energy management platform with a color touchscreen interface. It can automatically switch between heating sources in hybrid configurations to optimize costs or CO₂ emissions.

The heat pump is also equipped with a range of smart features, including over-the-air (OTA) updates, seamless integration with smart home platforms and compatibility with photovoltaic systems and smart grid signals. Furthermore, it supports multi-zone heating control, allowing greater flexibility and efficiency in different parts of a building.

In addition to space heating, the unit can also provide domestic hot water and cooling, with supply temperatures up to 75°C depending on the system configuration.

The manufacturer positions the product as particularly suitable for hybrid configurations, allowing integration with fossil fuel boilers or electric backup heaters.
