Two Dutch manufacturers have collaborated with TNO’s Perovskite Solar Cell experts to integrate spatial atomic layer deposit equipment to produce ultra-thin, high-quality nickel-oxide layers in a roll-to-roll process. The team focuses on the production integration in mid-2027, with full production by 2030.

Two Dutch manufacturers work together with Perovskite Solar Cell experts from the Dutch Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) to integrate spatial atomic layout (ALD) into a roll-to-roll process. They will use the deposition process to manufacture ultra-thin, high-quality nickel oxide (NIOX) hole drain layers (HTLs).

“The project is intended to develop a spatial atomic layer of low deposit for producing the NIOX layer on a near-pilot scale, suitable for roll-to-roll production of PSCs,” said Harald Kerp, senior business developer at TNO, told PV Magazine.

The effort based on the Netherlands uses ALD equipment made by Kalpana Systems. The third partner in the project is Hyet Solar, a thin film solar manufacturer with a roll-to-roll production line with aTmospheric Drukchemic vapor deposits (APCVD) and pLasma improved chemical vapor deposits (PECVD) equipment.

The project is intended to apply an ultra-thin film from NIOX on the Persovkiet pile of the Hyet Solar Product using Kalpana’s hardware with industrial-compatible transit and efficiency levels.

The team notes that the HTL is “crucial” for the stability of the solar cell of the perovskiet, affordability and power productivity, but the current organic HTLs are “precious and unstable”. Precision and speed are crucial for commercial viability, because they “ensure the quality and cost -effectiveness that are needed for large -scale production of perovskiet solar cells,” the team emphasized.

The initiative, known as Perovision Project, runs from February 2025 to January 2027 and focuses on integration into the Hyet Solar production line against mid -2027 and production on full scale by 2030.

Hyet Solar, founded in 2012, has been focused on amorphous silicon roof Zonne -PV and building integrated PV products, brand power foil. It recently attracted financing from institutional investors in 2023, with € 29 million, a combination of debt and venture financing. Kalpana also recently collected venture capital in a round of € 3.5 million.
