The Energy Commission of Nigeria has finalized a strategic partnership with Longi. The Chinese solar energy manufacturer has agreed to support the development of a solar panel factory in the country with a production capacity of up to 1 GW.

The deal was concluded earlier this month during a meeting between representatives of the Nigerian government and Longi at the company’s headquarters in China, following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two parties earlier this year.

According to a statement published by the committee, Longi “showed great interest in investing in Nigeria and showed willingness to promote concrete plans for the construction of the factory.”

The Longi project is the latest in a series of planned production sites in Nigeria aimed at boosting the country’s manufacturing solar energy market and domestic production.

In September, Nigeria’s Rural Electrification Agency a special vehicle was created with the Infrastructure Corporation from Nigeria and the Dutch solar manufacturer Solarge BV for a 1 GW solar panel factory.

In March, REA signed an agreement with Lagos-based renewable energy developer Oando Clean Energy for a 1.2 GW solar assembly plant. The Nigerian government has since submitted a proposal ban on the import of solar panels to help boost local production.
