Origami Solar started making steel solar panel frames in the United States after the assignment of his first automated line in the facility of Priert Steel, Arkansas.

This production system has been developed in collaboration with Prover Steel and Automation Partner DAC Robotics and is the only manufacturer of steel frame in the United States for solar panels. The steel frames of Origami Solar deal with the challenges with which American solar manufacturers are confronted by offering an aluminum frames produced in the interior for foreign aluminum frames, at a considerably lower cost versus domestic aluminum frames.

The company says that steel module frames offer superior strength, a 90% lower carbon footprint and fast one to two-day day inland transport, so that the risks are associated with weaker-imported aluminum frames and risky oversese supply chains, which are subject to delays, geopolitic Instability and rates.

The announcement of 25% rates on imported steel and aluminum further emphasizes the risks and uncertainty associated with imported frames – as well as the rising costs. The policy underlines the crucial need for a safe, domestic supply chain – one that delivers origami solar by scaling the production of steel frame in the United States.

With the expertise of Priefert Steel in steel roll-forming products for the automated production systems of DAC Robotics, the production approach of origami flat steel coils transforms into complete sun-frame components. The fully automated system integrates continuous steel frame formation with customer-specific frame lengths, hole punching and corner key adding. The adjusted automation system of the DAC Robotics integrates ultimate assembly and packaging in-line.

“By working together with best-in-class companies such as Prover Steel and DAC-Robotics, we not only produce a superior frame, but we also build a scalable and disrupted domestic supply chain,” said Gregg Patterterson, CEO of origami Solar. “Delivering cost-effective steel module frames uses a robust and ready American steel production industry, creates jobs and improves the security and reliability of the solar supply chain.”
