After almost a year in power, the Labor government has realized many of the promises in its manifesto, with a supporting policy for supporting the growth of the solar industry in the UK.
Only two weeks until Minister of Energy Michael Shanks delivers the keynote address on the Clean Power / UK Solar Summit 2025, here are some of the latest policy updates that form the British solar energy.
Great British Energy launches with solar investments
Great British Energy was set up and the first investment of £ 200 million was to support the installation of PV on the roof at schools and NHS buildings.
A change in the Great British Energy Bill was introduced to prohibit the use of solar products with forced labor in their GB Energy projects. Solar -Energy Portal Heard of a Solar Energy UK spokesperson that GB Energy “will implement the amendment through working with the Solar Stewardship Initiative.”
The government currently consults plans that would make the implementation of a community Benefit Fund a legal requirement. Is introduced as part of the government plan for change, would set minimal amounts for the Fund for Community Benefits based on the size of infrastructure projects, starting with tens of thousands a year to the smaller ending and reaching millions for large -scale developments.
A community Benefit Fund is just one way to improve the local attitude towards solar development. A panel on day one of the British solar, top, Best practices approaches of community involvement: from consultation to cooperationWill investigate a series of strategies for involving local communities.
Gemma Grimes, policy director and delivery for Solar Industry Trade Association Solar Energy UK, point out that “solar farms already offer a wide range of voluntary community benefits”.
Grimes will moderate a panel that tackles the skills gap in the solar industry on day two of the event.
Future houses as standard meets the expectation of the industry
Ministers have confirmed after almost a year of pressure that the Future Homes Standard (FHS) will include the provision that all new Build -property property will be installed on the roof Solar PV. The FHS will state that if developers cannot meet the requirements to install PV cover on the roof, equal to 40% of the floor space of a building, a “reasonable amount of” coverage is still required.
As such, it would be a functional requirement of the building regulations that new houses, with rare exceptions, have been built with renewable electricity generation. The government states that “in the vast majority of cases” this would be for generating solar energy.
