Before January 2026, Portugal launches a competitive tender for 750 MVA in battery energy storage, as part of a wider package of € 400 million aimed at improving the reliability of the network and preventing future Black -Outs.

The announcement was made by the Portuguese Milieu Minister, Maria da Graça Carvalho, who said that the country is now better prepared for possible power outages, although “hopefully will not happen”, and expects that they will see clear improvements in the national grid in the coming three years.

The new measures come three months after a large blackout on April 28, which was created in Spain. Although the official investigation is underway, the minister noted that the energy systems of Portugal are generally ‘safe, resilient and reliable’.
