Illinois Clean Energy Trade Associations unite and call for the consultant of the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) to make a critical revision of its upcoming report on purchasing clean energy storage.

The report, currently in draft form and prepared by an ICC-appointed consultant, is intended to guide the path of the state to deploying 1500 MW of energy storage as part of the ultimate clean energy and grid reliability goals of Illinois, a benchmark set by Recent Legislation. However, the early design indicates a recommendation of approximately half of that quantity, which encourages a uniform reaction of the clean energy industry of Illinois and insist on course correction.

Show projections Illinois ultimately needs 15,000 MW or more storage to prevent a shortage of energy capacity and price peaks. Industrial leaders warn that the failure of this goal could hinder progress at a time when Illinois must speed up the use of clean energy to meet the growing demand and prevent energy shortages.

The Illinois Clean Energy industry has recommended changes to the draft report, including:

  • Set a first purchase recommendation of 1500 MW, instead of 840 MW, to indicate what is viable, ready and necessary to serve the resources of resources of Illinois.
  • Keep additional tenders between August 2025 and the end of 2026 that would result in a total of 3000 MW storage online by 2030. This places Illinois on schedule for what is needed to curb energy shortages by 2030.
  • Suppose a clear target for projects that will be online by 2035, because now decisions are made about these projects, for which years are needed to complete. This will encourage companies to stay on course for completion.
  • The purchase of the utility scale must be able to take into account both itself and hybrid/co-located projects. This would ensure a real open market purchase to advance the most cost-effective projects for Ratepayer benefit.

The latest study is due to the ICC on 1 May and will take into account feedback to the design of stakeholders, including the energy industry, environmental groups, organized work and utilities. Read more about the study and view the current depth here.

“ACP applauds the first steps that the legislative power has taken to power a 1500 MW purchasing of energy storage this year. Illinois needs energy storage on its schedule. And it needs a considerable amount. Energy storage is a unique and critical tool to develop a more flexible and adaptive grid, said Erika fore State State, said Erika Forfair, said Forfair, said Forfair, said Forfair, said forfair, for -Fair, for -Fair, For -Fair, fore Gid.
