Teesworks and Energy Optimization Solutions (EOS) have reached an agreement under which the latter will build a battery energy storage system (BESS) at Teesside’s Freeport development.

EOS, a provider of energy storage solutions, is currently completing its application for planning permission for the BESS, which is planned for the south-west corner of the Teesworks site. If permission is granted, construction of the battery storage facility is expected to take approximately 12 months.

Solar energy portal received confirmation from Peter Walker, director of EOS, that the £62 million facility will be a 100 MW system with an energy storage capacity of 200 MWh.

It will join NatPower’s proposed 1GW BESS for the site announced in May, as well as other planned energy initiatives including blue and green hydrogen production plants.

Chris Musgrave, Chairman of Teesworks Limited, said: “This latest agreement will further strengthen Teesworks’ reputation as a leading UK center for the transition to Net Zero. Battery storage is an essential part of ensuring that energy needs can be met from renewable sources, regardless of weather conditions.”

EOS director Peter Walker said: “We are really looking forward to coming to Teesworks. With so much renewable energy development planned for the site, such a supportive environment and such an experienced team leading the charge, this is the ideal location for our next battery storage facility.”

EOS already has several battery storage projects underway in Great Britain. The energy storage solutions provider is backed by funding from Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners; the two are working together on a 230MW/460MWh BESS in Newport South Wales.

The development of the Welsh BESS is being delivered by EOS and Quinbrook under their portfolio company Uskmouth Energy Storage (UES). E.ON came on board in March 2024.

In October 2023, Quinbrook raised a UK-focused £620 million renewables fund, as covered by our sister site, Energy storage.news. The investment manager also notably financed the flagship 373MW Cleve Hill solar-plus-storage nationally significant infrastructure project (NSIP), which it acquired in 2021.

Cleve Hill, due to be completed later this year, will have “more than” 150MW of battery energy storage.
