BNZ, a Barcelona-based independent power producer (IPP), has announced a 49 MW solar project in northern Portugal in partnership with GRS, a Madrid-based solar engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor.

September 5, 2024 Patrick Jowett

BNZ, a Spanish IPP, is working with GRS, an EPC solar contractor under the Gransolar Group, on a 49 MW solar power plant in northern Portugal.

The project, located near Vila Nova de Famalicão, will generate enough energy to power approximately 14,000 households. Construction is now underway and GRS is building the factory together with local company Triple Watt. BNZ has also signed a protocol with the local government for the conservation of cork oaks and the reforestation of areas with native species.

“This is the result of the work we have developed with Vila Nova de Famalicao in recent months to ensure that the promotion of a more sustainable future goes hand in hand with the growth of local communities,” said Luis Selva, CEO of BNZ .

BNZ has a European solar portfolio of more than 1.7 GW under development in Southern Europe. This project is the company’s first in Portugal, but it plans to install around 600 MW in the country by 2026.

The project is the seventh installation for GRS in Portugal. The company, which specializes in solar power plants, said it has 2.9 GW of installed capacity across 118 operational plants around the world.

Portugal had 3,876 MW of cumulative installed solar capacity at the end of 2023, compared to 2,646 MW at the end of the previous year, according to figures from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
