The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), the US Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), and German battery analysis specialist Twaice jointly evaluated 26 battery fires between 2018 and 2023. They say that the diversity of components plays a crucial role. when lighting fires.

US-based EPRI has created a database of battery storage fires around the world. 50 incidents were registered in the period 2018-2023. With support from the U.S. Department of Energy’s PNNL and Twaice, a Munich-based manufacturer of battery analysis software, EPRI has now investigated 26 fire incidents to determine the cause of the fires.

EPRI said that damage is more likely caused by system components outside the cells and control systems. It was said that the complexity of coordinating numerous components could cause a fire.

The group said outages will also occur as the range of components continues to increase. They identified the operation of storage systems as the second most common source of errors. Most operating systems are the reason for failures, especially the status limits in systems.
