The European Union added 27.1 GWh of battery energy storage capacity in 2025, with utility-scale systems accounting for the majority of new installations, as residential storage declined due to lower electricity prices and reduced support schemes, according to a new report from SolarPower Europe.

The European Union’s battery energy storage fleet has grown for the twelfth year in a row, marking another record year for new installations. According to a new report from SolarPower Europe, 27.1 GWh was deployed in 2025, an increase of 45% year-on-year, largely driven by utility-scale systems.

This confirms that Europe has already increased its battery fleet tenfold since 2021, from 7.8 GWh to 77.3 GWh today. To meet its energy flexibility needs by 2030, the European Union must now repeat this tenfold increase and scale up to around 750 GWh by the end of the decade, the industry association said in its market analysis.

2025 marked a turning point for the European battery storage market, when utility-scale systems became the main driver of expansion, providing 55% of all new capacity added. Improved market conditions and strengthened policy frameworks saw large-scale projects reach record levels.
