JA Solar unveils TÜV Nord-certified results of solar panel tests in the desert – SPE

A TÜV Nord-certified white paper showcasing JA Solar’s DesertBlue module series says the modules, which are specifically designed for desert areas and wastelands, exceed industry benchmarks and provide optimized, leveled electricity costs.

Chinese solar manufacturer JA Solar has published a TÜV Nord-certified whitepaper showcasing its DesertBlue module series.

The white paper highlights the power generation capacity, weather resistance and performance of JA Solar’s DesertBlue modules in deserts, Gobi areas and wastelands under test conditions and simulations.

Desert-Gobi-Wasteland environments cover nearly 27% of China’s territory and about a quarter of the global land area, according to the white paper, with abundant but underutilized land resources for solar energy deployment. Although such climates provide abundant solar radiation and land resources, solar projects face challenges such as dust influences, strong winds, high-intensity UV radiation and wide temperature fluctuations.

JA Solar says its DesertBlue modules are the first was launched in Augustprovide excellent self-cleaning performance thanks to a nanoscale self-cleaning coating that reduces dust adhesion. The company says this results in a reduction in light transmission by more than 32% compared to conventional PV panel glass, extending its lifespan by up to five years.

The modules are available with powers up to 650 W, have an efficiency of 24% and can withstand a front load of 6,000 Pa and a back load of 4,000 Pa, which represents an improvement of more than 60% in charging capacity compared to conventional PV modules.

The white paper also emphasizes compliance with IEC requirements. The operating temperature range of the modules has been increased from 55-15 C specified in IEC 61215-2 to 80-5 C, while their cumulative irradiation has been increased from 15 kWh/m2 as required by the IEC 61215-2 standard to 220 kWh/m2.

JA Solar also says its DesertBlue modules can operate in dusty environments at temperatures nearly 5C lower than conventional PV modules, providing additional power generation capacity. Test results in the white paper highlight that at JA Solar’s manufacturing base in Shanghai’s Fengxian district, DesertBlue modules achieved a 7.09% power generation gain compared to conventional modules during a 10-day study period in July, simulating harsh dusty conditions.

Over a study period of nearly four months, DesertBlue modules demonstrated a 4.98% increase in power generation compared to conventional modules during an empirical test in the Ulan Buh Desert in Inner Mongolia, Northern China, where JA Solar employed 2P mounting.

JA Solar has also established an empirical test platform in the Tengger Desert in Inner Mongolia, in collaboration with TÜV Nord, and a demonstration project in the Xinjiang region of northwest China, with energy generation data currently being monitored.

The white paper adds that the DesertBlue modules reduce the initial investment costs of projects in deserts, Gobi areas and wastelands, achieving savings of CNY 0.003 ($0.00042)/W in grounding costs, along with savings of CNY 0.04/W and CNY 0.025/W in cleaning robot costs for the China and Middle East markets.

In its conclusion, the white paper states that the DesertBlue module series exceeds industry benchmarks, sets a new performance standard and delivers optimized, leveled electricity costs.

“Their exceptional temperature coefficient and bifacial power generation capacity ensure stable and efficient power delivery under harsh conditions, including extreme heat, desert environments and high-albedo surfaces,” the report says. “The product has successfully passed more stringent tests according to IEC standards, ensuring more than 25 years of reliable performance for solar power plants.”
