While lithium-ion batteries continue to improve in both performance and cost, interest in solid-state batteries, which promise better energy density and safety, has not waned.

Geographically, innovation in solid state batteries is concentrated in a limited number of countries. According to Taipei-based intelligence agency TrendForce, China and South Korea lagged behind Japan’s subsidy of over $660 million for all-solid-state batteries in commercialization by 2024.

In the Battery Industry Strategy 2024, Japan has set the goal of bringing fully solid-state batteries (ASSB) to the market by around 2030. At the end of last year, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has a total of four major R&D projects in the field of ASSB materials and manufacturing, including those of Toyota, Idemitsu, Mitsui Kinzoku and TK Works.
