J-Power announced an investment in US-based perovskite solar specialist Active Surfaces, along with plans to conduct product testing.
Japanese utility company Electric Power Development Company, known as J-powerannounced a partnership with the American company Active surfacesa developer of lightweight, flexible perovskite solar panels, to conduct pilot product testing in various environments. It includes an investment from J-Power of an undisclosed amount in the three-year-old spinoff of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
“Through this investment, J-Power will work with Active Surfaces to conduct pilot testing of the company’s products. As a next step, J-Power aims to create new businesses using diverse perovskite solar cell products suitable for different installation environments,” the company said in a statement.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The pilot is both a demonstration of production capabilities and an open-air pilot to test performance in the field, says Richard Swartwout, CEO of Active Surfaces. pv magazine.
Active Surfaces’ technology was described in the announcement as “ultra-light, flexible perovskite solar panels that peel and stick” to roofs and facades, opening up surfaces that aren’t necessarily accessible to glass-wrapped panels due to weight restrictions. The potential to reduce installation costs was also mentioned.
Further mention was made of Active Surfaces’ manufacturing capabilities, describing the achievement of “high yields and exceptional capital efficiency through a rapid roll-to-roll process,” and the devices showing “excellent durability” under real-world conditions, both at high temperatures and high humidity.
Its manufacturing processes, material choices, coating control systems and encapsulation technology were highlighted as some of the ways it is addressing the challenges of perovskite solar commercialization.
Active Surfaces was founded in 2022. Last year, the company announced it was raising venture capital to scale up production, expand R&D efforts and bring its solutions to market faster. reported Through pv magazine USA.
J-Power noted that the collaboration is in line with that of the company J-Power Blue Mission 2050which aims to accelerate renewable energy activities, as well as several other new energy technology initiatives, towards achieving carbon neutrality.
