Schneider Electric has unveiled an energy storage system for network-scale applications. The companies Battery energy storage system (BESS) is the cornerstone for a fully integrated microgrid solution, powered by Schneider Electric’s controls, optimization and world-renowned digital and field services.

Distribution company Gray bar is the first channel partner for Schneider Electric’s new BESS, offered as part of the EcoStruxure Microgrid Flex system.

“With more than two decades of battery conversion expertise, we are proud to introduce a solution that is carefully designed with flexibility at its core,” said Jana Gerber, president of Schneider Electric of North America Microgrids. “Our goal is to streamline energy spending while increasing the use of renewable sources, including solar energy. Combining our proven track record of innovation with Graybar’s focus on sustainable energy solutions will accelerate this mission.”

BESS consists of a lithium iron phosphate battery system, a battery management system, a power conversion system and a controller. It has been tested and validated to work with Schneider Electric’s standardized microgrid system, EcoStruxure Microgrid Flex, and is fully integrated into the software suite, which includes EcoStruxure. Microgrid Management and EcoStruxure Microgrid Advisor. With a scalable configuration and advanced security controls, BESS minimizes energy costs and features:

  • Full Integration: The all-in-one enclosure includes pre-integrated components for both AC-coupled and DC-coupled BESS, streamlining on-site engineering, construction and installation processes while minimizing labor and material costs. The parallel capability allows multiple BESS units to function as a unified entity. This comprehensive integration includes inverters, batteries, cooling systems, transformers, safety devices and controls, ensuring optimal performance and efficiency.
  • UL Certified and Compliant: The solution is fully certified and compliant with UL 9540 certification and has a fire safety system design aligned with the latest standards outlined in NFPA 855.
  • Easy installation and maintenance: The turnkey system, with a tested, validated and documented architecture (TVDA), simplifies installation processes and exceeds the efficiency of traditional custom designs. The solution also integrates with energy management systems (EMS), significantly reducing integration time and minimizing field errors.
  • Resilience: The system provides bi-directional connectivity to the grid and offers the flexibility to operate both on-grid and off-grid. With the capacity to store energy for immediate access during power outages, BESS can provide up to 2 MW of power when needed.

Two connection-ready BESS options are available: a small, hybrid 2.2 meter NEMA 3R enclosure that is both AC and DC coupled, and a medium 6 meter NEMA 3R enclosure that is AC coupled is. Both feature scalable configurations with different options available from 60 kW to 2 MW in 2 hour and 4 hour configurations.
