About a quarter of all new PV systems on the roof installed in Spain in 2024 include battery storage, which underlines the continuous growth of distributed energy, despite a decrease in the total installed storage capacity.

The use of batteries for PV systems on the roof under the self-consumption regime of Spain decreased 34% years on year in 2024, with 327 MWh installed, according to data from the Spanish photovoltaic Union (UNEF), which warned of a “delay at the pace of the installation.”

Despite the decrease, 26% of the new grid-connected installations included batteries last year, which represents a capacity of 110 MWh.

The cumulative volume since 2022 is 2,205 MWh, with growth in commercial, industrial and off-grid segments, where there is “growing interest rates that want to optimize their energy consumption and reduce their exposure to market prices,” said José Donoso, director-general of UNEF.

UNEF welcomed the legal changes introduced in Royal Decree-Law 7/2025, including the establishment of a collective manager self-consumption and the expansion of the Surplus Energy division Radius to 5 km.

The Ministry of Spain for the ecological transition (Miteco) is currently reusing more than 650 comments submitted during the public consultation to change Royal Decree 244/2019 on self -consumption, which started in October 2024.

UNEF has called for various additional measures. These include the revision of the fixed component of the electricity rate to emphasize the variable term that would encourage energy savings and remuneration efficiency between self -researchers. They also request recognition of self -consumption without a license and simplified permits for systems up to 15 kW, with streamlined approval for projects up to 500 kW.

In the meantime, PV systems that work under the self-consumption regime continued to purchase batteries storage. According to UNEF, the installations fell by 17% in the first quarter of 2025, after a decrease of 31% in 2024. Compared to the quarterly average for 2024, the residential installations fell by 14%, the commercial systems fell 17% and the industrial installations fell by 20% in 2025.
