The world’s largest compressed air storage facility in a salt cave in China has been switched on, significantly strengthening the region’s renewable energy storage capacity, according to a statement from Harbin Electric Group.

The Guoxin Suyan Huai’an salt cave compressed air energy storage demonstration project consists of two 300 MW non-combustion compressed air energy storage plants. The 2.4 GWh compressed air adiabatic energy storage project stores electricity without burning fuel. Energy is stored through air compression and the heat generated during the process.

The project uses advanced molten salt storage and pressurized thermal water for thermal management, achieving a conversion efficiency of 71% according to equipment supplier Harbin Electric Corp.
