The Happurg pumped storage facility was closed in 2011 for safety reasons after the bottom of the upper reservoir was damaged. Uniper has carried out feasibility studies at the site, with the intention of reconnecting it to the electricity grid in 2028. The facility can store approximately 850 MWh of electricity in the form of pumped water.

Uniper has said it will invest around €250 million ($267 million) to recommission a pumped storage facility in Happurg, a city in Bavaria, southeastern Germany. The Düsseldorf-based utility multinational plans to reconnect the facility to the electricity grid in 2028.

Largest pumped storage facility in Bavaria

The Happurg plant is one of the largest pumped storage facilities in Germany and the largest in Bavaria. With a capacity of 160 MW, it has a drop height of 209 meters and can store approximately 850 MWh of electricity. It was shut down in 2011 for safety reasons after the bottom of the upper reservoir was damaged.

But hopes of returning the plant to service have not been completely abandoned and the facility has been subject to intensive underground investigation and geotechnical assessments. A feasibility study has been carried out and approved by the relevant authorities. The study outlined a technical concept for the rehabilitation of the upper basin, which would allow the project to be restarted.
