German energy company Uniper started the construction phase for its 45 MW portfolio of Zonne generation in Staffordshire, UK.

The Solar Port Feuille from Uniper in the UK consists of two projects in the Midlands: the Tamworth Solar Farm, with an export capacity of 30 MW and the 15MW tot monstrow solar farm in the Moors.

Uniper expects the construction to start this year, with the first power in 2026. Both projects received planning structure in 2023 and the Tamworth project received a contract for difference (CFD) in the 6 (AR6) allocation round in August 2024.

Alex Smethers, head of Renewables UK for Uniper, pointed out that the solar developments are some of the first renewable energy projects from Uniper in the UK. The energy company is committed to investing around € 8 billion (£ 6.6 billion) in ‘growth and transformation’ projects by the early 2030s. This includes the development of its European portfolio of wind projects for solar and onion.

As covered on our sister site, PV Tech” Uniper also starts the construction of solar developments in Germany and Hungary.

Many of the activities of Uniper in the United Kingdom to date have been driven to the present in the generation of gas. It was also the Ratcliffe-on-soar coal-fired power plant that was taken out of use last year.

The energy company says it is investigating opportunities to develop renewable energy sources in and around its existing power plants, aimed at solar and onion winds with some projects, including the installation of battery storage facilities.
