Battery Energy Storage System (Bess) Developer Balance Power has announced that it has successfully obtained the planning state for a new Bess project in Greater Manchester.

The Rochdale Bess, who is about ten miles outside of Manchester in Rochdale, is a 30 MW, two -hour energy storage development of two hours. The project will be located next to the M62 fast road; The traffic noise of the highway in the area means that the noise effects of the project will be minimal. A total of 12 battery storage units are installed on site, in addition to improvements of biodiversity set to deliver an increase of 34.82% in Habitat units and an increase of 16.44% in Hedgerow units in the area.

The planning application for the project was submitted in January 2024. Although Balance Power has not been confirmed when it starts with the construction of the Rochdale Bess, the developer has stated that the site will be confirmed in 2028.

Lois Gale, designer at Balance Power, said that protecting this planning approval meant an important milestone in the company’s efforts to deliver a more flexible energy infrastructure in the VK. Gale added: “We are grateful for the constructive dialogue that we have had with residents and councilors to ensure that our Rochdale facility will strengthen the national energy breach and at the same time deliver meaningful benefits for the local community”.

Less than three weeks ago, the company announced that it had obtained the planning allocation for the Coylton Bess, a development of 29.9 MW of energy storage in the East Ayrshire region in Scotland. The development, which will include 18 battery units and will cover 2.67 hectares of land south of the Coylton Electricity substation, is expected to be operational in the summer of 2026.

In mid -April, Balance Power was granted the building permit for a 49.5 MW Bess in Staffordshire, the Hinksford Bess. This development was approved by South Staffordshire Council in a unanimous decision after an extensive consultation process with the local community. A starting date for the start of the construction of the project, with 36 battery units that spread over a 2.59-hectare site has not yet been confirmed; However, the developer states that he expects the Bess to be operational in the fall of next year.
