British Columbia, the westernmost province of Canada, makes its discount schedule for heat pump installations available for apartment tenants and condo owners.

The Better Homes Energy Savings Program Condo and Apartment Recently offers CAD 5,000 ($ 3,638) for the purchase and installation of powerful electric heat pumps in individual suites in residential buildings with multiple units.

The first phase of the program was open on Tuesday. It includes suites in apartments and apartment buildings of six floors or less that are currently heated by electricity. It is estimated that it will support the installation of at least 500 heat pumps.

A statement from the provincial government says that the program will be expanded in the fall with apartments and apartments that are heated by fossil fuels.

To receive a heat pump, income qualified apartments or condo owners must obtain a signed consent form from their landlords or layers. Applicants then receive a suitability code that is used by a registered contractor to secure the discount.

Adrian Dix, the Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions of the province, said that almost a third of the houses in the region are in homes with several units “We had a great success to support the switch to heat pumps in single -family homes and in entire residential buildings with several units,” said Dix. “All British Columbians who need a heat pump must have access to one, to feel comfortable all year round, to experience better energy efficiency and save money.”

Since the introduction of the Better Homes Energy Savings Program in June last year, British Columbia has provided financing for 27,832 heat pumps.

The program is funded by the provincial government together with contributions from electric utilities BC Hydro and the federal government. In April of this year, the province can announce 50 million in each of the following two tax years to deliver a maximum of 8,300 new heat pump discounts.

In addition to the discount schedule, BC Hydro offers non-income qualified discounts to customers in individual suites in apartments and apartment buildings up to CAD 2,500 on powerful heat pumps and CAD 1,000 for heat pump boilers in electrically heated buildings.

BC Hydro started a discount schedule last year for the installation of residential solar energy and battery energy storage systems.
