China’s 600 MW/2.4 GWh storage facility will be the world’s largest CAES site – SPE

With an installed capacity of 600 MW and a storage capacity of 2,400 MWh, the Huai’an Salt Cavern project is now the world’s largest compressed air energy storage (CAES) facility. This surpasses the previously titled 300MW/1,500MWh project commissioned earlier this year.

While CAES remains a relatively small share of the overall Chinese energy storage market compared to batteries and pumped storage, the sector is rapidly expanding as larger long-term projects develop.

The recently commissioned 600 MW/2.4 GWh Huai’an Salt Cavern project dramatically increases deployed CAES capacity and claims the title of the world’s largest such project. Previously, in January 2026, the record was held by a CAES installation of 300 MW/1.5 GWh using two underground salt caves in central China’s Hubei province.

However, Huai’an’s lead may be short-lived, with a CAES project of 700 MW/4,200 MWh in the Shanzhou district of Sanmenxia, ​​which is already under development.
