US-based safety certification body UL has updated its test method to evaluate the risk of thermal runner in battery energy storage systems (BESS).
Updates of the fifth edition of UL’s ANSI/CAN/UL 9540A standard include clearer criteria for determining cell-to-cell propagation of thermal runner, a chemical reaction that rises rapid temperature and pressure in battery cells, leading to the risk of fire and explosion.
Other test updates determined by UL after consultation with the energy storage industry, regulatory authorities, members of the Technical Committee of UL and the fire brigade community, new test methods for high temperatures for different battery chemistry, such as sodiumion ion’s places; And new test protocols for emerging curriculum applications such as on the roof and open garage installation.
